Fred Hersch with Norma Winstone
Saturday, November 27, 2010, 8 pm
Glenn Gould Studio, 250 Front Street West
Two Grammy-nominated and internationally acclaimed musicians in one night: pianist Fred Hersch performs a solo set and is then joined by vocalist Norma Winstone. Each musician has performed with the top names on the international jazz scene and each has made what are recognized as some of the most important contributions to the jazz idiom.
Pianist and composer Fred Hersch has been called a "one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation" by Downbeat and has earned a place among the foremost jazz artists in the world today. From the late 70's onward as a sideman to jazz legends including Joe Henderson, Art Farmer and Stan Getz, he has solidified a reputation as a versatile master of jazz piano, as well as a relentlessly probing composer and conceptualist. He is widely recognized for his ability to steadfastly create a unique body of original works while reinventing the standard jazz repertoire – investing time-tested classics with keen insight, fresh ideas and extraordinary technique. Whether unaccompanied, in duo, working with trios and quintets, Hersch has explored the jazz tradition to its fullest even as he opens new and undiscovered doors. Hersch's numerous accomplishments include a 2003 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for composition, two Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance and a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition. He has appeared on over one hundred recordings, including more than two-dozen albums as bandleader/solo pianist.
Some say her voice defines an entire era of British and European Jazz. One ecstatic reviewer described it as, “both sumptuous and airily ethereal at once…” and since emerging on the London jazz scene in 1966, Norma Winstone has worked with many of the biggest names in Britain and Europe. Norma recorded five albums for ECM with Azimuth, and her own ECM album, Somewhere Called Home is widely considered to be a classic. Integral to Kenny Wheeler’s big band, her amazing voice enhances Music for Large and Small Ensembles. A gifted lyricist, Norma has written for many of the greats; her lyrics for Jimmy Rowles have been recorded by singers as diverse as Tierney Sutton and The Swingle Singers. She has earned Best Jazz Vocalist in the Melody Maker Poll, three nominations for the BBC Jazz Awards, an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and the Skoda Jazz Ahead Award for her contribution to European Jazz. Norma's trio (with pianist Glauco Venier and saxophonist/bass clarinetist Klaus Gesing) recording Distances garnered 4 1/2 stars in Downbeat Magazine, was named top Jazz Vocal CD from Academie Du Jazz in France and received a Grammy nomination as Jazz Vocal CD of 2008. Their latest ECM recording will be released this fall.

On October 3rd, The Jazz Performance and Education Centre presented its second annual Jazz Gala. The evening, a tribute to the Honourable Warren K. Winkler, Chief Justice of Ontario, introduced the new 19-piece JPEC Jazz Orchestra, featuring some of Canada’s top jazz artists, award winners and educators – a veritable who's who among jazz musicians. We'd like to thank our sponsors for their support and for helping to make the Jazz Gala possible.
The evening’s featured soloist, jazz diva Ranee Lee, O.C., enjoys a successful career as one of Canada's most popular jazz vocalists and recording artists - an award winning songwriter, educator, actress and children's book author. Emerging jazz artists, many of whom study with JPEC Jazz Orchestra members, performed throughout the evening in the lobby thus merging jazz educators, performers and students for one stellar evening.
