Jazz Education

JPEC will educate audiences and students of all ages about the rich heritage of jazz, its great works and musicians and the relationship between jazz and other disciplines.

Through performance. JPEC will present accessible performances by local and international jazz artists by always providing student pricing and by reaching out to communities in need with subsidized tickets. JPEC is determined to provide a welcoming environment for the community at large.

Through conversation. Selected performances will feature special pre-show events engaging the artist in conversation with the audience - taking questions, explaining their work and exchanging ideas. JPEC is dedicated to making the music and the music makers accessible and understood as well as appreciated.

Through workshops. Performing musicians will present special daytime workshops for school groups and other groups within the community. Workshops will examine the various components of jazz, from the roles of various instruments to the importance of improvisation to compositional elements and more.

Through master classes. JPEC will partner with local post-secondary jazz programs to offer master classes with visiting musicians, providing invaluable access to some of the most important jazz artists working today.

Through volunteerism. Jazz students and members of the community will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing JPEC activities in a variety of capacities throughout the facility.

Through history. JPEC’s Archive Museum and Hall of Fame will help foster the appreciation of jazz by celebrating its greatest artists. The facility will display memorabilia, recordings and videos of Canadian and International jazz greats.

JPEC has established two collectives to help us reach our jazz education mandate: the Jazz Educators' Circle, made up of representatives from the top local jazz college and university programs; and the JPEC Jazz Orchestra, made up of some of Canada's top jazz musicians and educators, and which will be instrumental in the delivery of our educational programming.
